About the Procedure
Breast reconstruction can be performed immediately following mastectomy (immediate reconstruction) or at a later date (delayed reconstruction). The choice depends on the cancer treatment plan, body type, and personal preference.
Implant-Based Reconstruction
A tissue expander is placed beneath the chest muscle and gradually expanded over several weeks. Once the desired size is reached, the expander is replaced with a permanent silicone or saline implant.
Tissue Flap Techniques
Natural tissue is moved from the back (latissimus dorsi flap) or abdomen (TRAM or DIEP flap) to create a natural-feeling breast. These techniques often produce more natural results and do not require a separate implant.
Recovery
Recovery varies depending on the technique used. Most patients return to light activities within 4–6 weeks and full activity within 8–12 weeks. Regular follow-up appointments ensure optimal healing.
